The Church of St. Benedict, located in Avon MN, has a rich Benedictine history. In 1869 Reverenced Benedict Haindle, OSB was charged with opening a new mission in Avon. The first few Masses and Sacraments were held in a wagon shop. As time passed, the faithful of desired a more fitting worship space and in 1878 the new church was dedicated with St. Benedict as its patron saint. The current church was built in 1928 following a fire which burnt the old one down. There wasn’t a lot of money to build the current church, so local priests and parishioners helped pay for it by selling Minnesota 13 (a corn product turned to Moonshine) during prohibition. Minnesota 13 Moonshine would sell around four dollars a gallon at the time and it is a major factor to why we still have the Church we have today. The cost to build the church was around $55,316.90 and much of the labor was done by parishioners.
Over the many years of our history, St. John’s Abbey staffs our parish with Benedictine monks who share the principles of community and welcoming others if it were Christ himself. Here at St. Benedict’s our staff, our parish and our surrounding community welcome you as we gather to celebrate our faith and history together.
