Sacraments
“Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law… The seven sacraments touch all stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.

The Sacred Oils
In the Catholic Church, three holy oils are used in the sacraments: the Oil of the Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism. The Oil of the Catechumens is used in Baptism to strengthen and prepare individuals for their Christian life. The Oil of the Sick is used in the Anointing of the Sick to bring spiritual and sometimes physical healing, as well as to offer comfort and strength in times of illness or near death. The Sacred Chrism, a mixture of olive oil and balsam, is the most sacred of the three and is used in Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit and consecration to God. These oils are blessed by the bishop during the Chrism Mass, which is traditionally celebrated during Holy Week, often on Holy Thursday or an earlier day in some dioceses. This Mass is a solemn and significant liturgical event in which priests renew their vows, and the bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism while blessing the other two oils, emphasizing the unity of the Church and the importance of the sacraments in Christian life.
